Stories From The Pews

From The Form Book To The Good Book

Let me tell you first of all how I came to be where I am today.

It started on July 2nd 1994, a Saturday much like any other Saturday.  Pop over the newsagents for the Daily Express [my favorite paper for the horses and the greyhounds], study form then up the club for a game of cards with various visits to the local betting office throughout the afternoon.

That night my wife and I had arranged to go to the Bush Chapel in Blaenclydach for her sister’s baptism.  Well I can honestly say that the service that night, when nine people, young and old went through the water’s of baptism, was probably the most moving service I had been to;  certainly since my father passed away some 14 years earlier.  By the end of the night, to say that I was curious was putting it mildly.  I felt that I wanted to know more about this new life that these people had been given so I decided to go to the chapel the next day, twice in fact and twice during the week.  I had this strange desire in my heart to want to go there and I did this for four weeks until on July 31st I gave my heart to Jesus.

Now let me tell you about my old life

You have pprobably heard the saying “Swears like a trooper” well that was me.  I used to swear, probably every sentence, but never at home.  Of course I was a cheat and a heavy gambler; to put it mildly, I wasn’t very nice to know.  I didn’t care how I got hold of the money as long as I had some to gamble with.  It got so bad at times that my wife couldn’t leave her purse, cheque books or any money anywhere, it just wasn’t safe at home and the air would be blue.  Sometimes I would win large amounts of money, but usually I would lose all I had won before plus some more of my own.

But that Saturday in early July 1994 was the day that everything changed in my life. When Jesus came into my life He took the need for all those things away and replaced them with a desire to come to His house, to praise and worship Him and to thank Him for giving me a new life.  Let me just say - He must have had long arms to reach down to where I was.

I was 48 years old when I gave my heart to Jesus and the only regret I have is that I didn’t do it a lot earlier.  Since that night He has been Someone I can turn to any time of the day or night.  He has answered prayers and has never let me down.  So, if you haven’t yet asked Jesus into your life it’s not too late; why not do as I did.  I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed.  Just remember this - however big the sins are in your life they are not too big for Jesus to forgive.  You only have to confess them to Him and ask His forgiveness.  It’s that easy!!
